Incubator for Vanuatu research centre

The Vanuatu Agricultural Research and Technical Centre (VARTC) in Santo, Vanuatu, has received a 432-egg capacity small poultry egg incubator from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vanuatu on March 28 2013. The incubator will be used to produce village chicks for distribution to participating farmers at three project sites at Siviri and Malafau on Efate and Middlebush on Tanna Islands.

Incubator for Solomon Islands NGO

The Kastom Gaden Association (KGA) of Solomon Islands has received a 400-egg capacity small poultry egg incubator from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock on March 19 2013. The incubator will be used to produce village chicks for distribution to participating farmers at three project sites at Aruligho in Guadalcanal Province, Hunda and Kena in Western Province and Buma in Malaita Province.

Enabling smallholder livestock services in PNG

Stakeholders of a collaborative project on livestock services in PNG deliberated on enhancing capacity building and networking among key players in a bid to address common challenges faced by the subsector and improve livestock production in the country.

A project meeting was held in Lae at the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) on March 14 2013 to identify key issues and finetune project activities.

Enhancing the role of small scale feed milling to develop PNG’s monogastric industries

Smallholder and semi commercial farmers engaged in the monogastric sector (aquaculture, pig and poultry) can improve profitable with the use of locally available feed resources rather than imported ingredients which cost them dearly.

Rice pest serious but manageable

Brown Plant Hopper (BPH) is an important insect pest of rice which farmers will have to live with in PNG but there are control methods, other than insecticides, which farmers can use to reduce the pest’s intensity, a Japanese rice expert told a seminar in Lae on March 6 2013.

Experts meet on safe exchange of genetic resources in Western Pacific

Protocols and procedures for the safe exchange of plant genetic resources between three Western Pacific countries were reviewed and refined by stakeholders from PNG, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu during a workshop at the NARI HQ in Lae from February 5-7, 2013.

Farm mechanization project begins

Agricultural mechanization increases productivity of land and labour, improves quality of produce, and reduces loss of produce. The use of improved farm implements and machinery also increases efficiency of costly inputs such as fertilizers, chemicals and seeds; and maximizes profitability.

PNG and Solomon Islands are embarking on agricultural mechanization as an important input to bring efficiency to the farm level and improve agriculture. This initiative is supported by the EU-ACP through a farm mechanization project which got started in August 2012.

Rabaraba agricultural rehabilitation

Rabaraba District in Milne Bay was a beneficiary of an agricultural rehabilitation initiative between 2010-2012, courtesy of NARI and the PNG Sustainable Development Programme (PNSDP).

We are approaching another Festive Season and 2012 will pass by in the next few days. On this occasion, I wish to extend our very best wishes to all our staff, partners and stakeholders. Year 2012 has had its own challenges. However, we managed through and achieved most of our planned activities.
