NARI Prepares for Open Day

6th April 2005

The National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) has begun preparations for its annual Open Day. This year’s (2005) Open Day will be held on 5th May to coincide with the Institute’s 8th Anniversary. This popular farmer’s outreach activity will take place at the Sir Alkan Tololo Research Centre at Bubia outside Lae City.

In line with the Government’s focus on agricultural and rural development, the Institute has chosen “Improved Technologies for Agricultural Development” as the theme for this year’s celebration and open day.

Activities will include displays, demonstration of new and improved agricultural technologies and training activities. NARI is inviting a number of partner and collaborating organizations in R & D, the private sector, educational and training institutions, extension providers, NGOs, and community groups to participate in the Open Day by exhibiting their activities and improved technologies.

The programme will also include the official release of some more NARI developed and assessed technologies, and provision of demonstration and training in such improved technologies.

Guests expected include a number of state ministers and Governor of Morobe and a number of government officials and private sector representatives.

Acting Director General Dr Sergie Bang said the annual open days are an important part of NARI’s farmer outreach activities.

“This is an opportunity for us to meet with farmers and stakeholders and inform them of our science based agricultural innovations. Through this activity they can learn about the technologies, adopt them and thereby improve their agricultural production, food security, nutrition and income opportunities and in doing so contribute to the country’s overall economic growth and prosperity.”

All are welcome to participate.
