The PNG National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) is the leading institute in Papua New Guinea (PNG) for conducting applied, adaptive and development oriented research on food crops, livestock, alternative food and cash crops, and resource management issues; and providing technical, analytical and diagnostic services and information to the entire agriculture sector in PNG. As an autonomous statutory organization, the Institute is governed by Institute Council.

Applicants are invited from suitably qualified and experienced persons for the following positions, which are available for immediate recruitment.

1. Principal Economist (Grade 14–16) - Based at NARI Headquarters, Bubia, Lae (Open for both PNG & non PNG Citizens)

The appointee will lead and co-ordinate the development of socio-economics research and development programme within the Institute and for the agricultural sector of PNG.   The major areas of focus include constraints and opportunities analysis, programme prioritization and planning, technology and policy assessment, market and marketing systems studies covering demand and supply analysis, socio-cultural issues, policy research and policy formulation, optimization of resource use, innovation systems, out-scaling and up-scaling of innovations, and designing and implementing M&E and impact assessment studies.

 Applicants must have a post-graduate degree, preferably at PhD level, in agricultural economics or economics plus a minimum of 7 years of research, policy and development experience.

2. Principal Livestock Scientist (Grade 14-16) – NARI Livestock Programme, Labu  (Open for both PNG &    non-  PNG citizens)

The Incumbent will lead and co-ordinate the aquaculture research and development programme within the Livestock Research Programme of NARI and for the agriculture sector of PNG. The major areas of focus include design, develop and implement research and development projects in inland fisheries and marine aquaculture by smallholder farmers; develop, test and adapt appropriate technologies for feeding of fish; management of fish brood stock; management of inland ponds; adaptation of cage culture practices using suitable fish species; fish health management; management of water recirculation tank systems; management of induced reproduction in fish species and handling and processing of fisheries products. The appointee will also be involved in the training of fish farmers and young researchers.

 Applicants must have a post-graduate degree, preferably at PhD level, in biology, fisheries, marine biology or related fields plus a minimum of 7 years of research, training and development experience in fisheries.

3. Senior/Principal Monitoring and Evaluation Officer (Grade 12–14) - Based at NARI Headquarters, Bubia, Lae

The appointee will be required to design and execution of  monitoring and evaluation and impact assessment studies, covering various levels and stages of Institute’s R&D programmes such as projects, thematic areas and corporate.  This will require understanding of M&E and impact assessment methods in the context of research project outputs, programme outcomes and developmental impacts at local, regional, and national levels.  The other relevant areas of work will include technology and policy assessment, market and marketing systems studies, programme planning, prioritization and research resource allocations. 

Applicants must have a post-graduate, preferably Master or PhD level, in planning, economics, agricultural economics plus a minimum 5 years of relevant experience.
