Position Vacancies - Scientists

The National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) is the leading Institute in Papua New Guinea for conducting applied, adaptive and development oriented research on food crops, livestock, alternative food and cash crops, and resource management issues; and providing technical, analytical and diagnostic services and information to the entire agriculture sector in Papua New Guinea.

Applicants are invited from suitably qualified and experienced persons for the following positions, which are available for immediate recruitment. Positions are open to both PNG Citizens and Non – PNG Citizens.

1.         Principal Scientist – Crop Improvement/Breeder, (Grade 15 - 16) – Based at NARI MRC, Bubia

The appointee will be required to provide leadership in developing and implementing priority projects in crop improvement and developing seed systems for traditional root crops, vegetables and other vegetative propagated crops such as sweet potato, potato, yam, taro, banana, green vegetables and pyrethrum. This will involve improving productivity through genetic enhancement using conventional breeding methods and supported by modern biotechnological techniques, germplasm introductions and evaluations, collection, conservation and utilization of PNG plant genetic resources as well as developing and testing suitable systems and approaches to improve the access of farmers to such improved crop varieties and high quality planting materials.

Applicant must have a post-graduate qualification, preferably at PhD level, in plant breeding, biotechnology or agronomy plus a minimum of seven (10) years of research experience.

2.         Senior Scientist – Soil/Water Management, (Grade 13 - 14) – Based at NARI HRC, Aiyura

The appointee will provide leadership in developing and implementing priority research projects in Soil and Water Management for high and low attitude regions in PNG. He/she will oversee a team of junior scientists and will be responsible for providing scientific and professional guidance and expert assistance to clients and stakeholders.

Candidates must have a sound understanding of research methodology, experimental design, statistical analysis, participatory research methods, and should possess good writing and computer skills.

Applicant must have post-graduate qualification, preferably at Masters in Soil/Water Management or relevant discipline with a minimum of seven (7) years of research experience

3.         Entomologist x 2 (Grade 12 - 13) – Based at NARI Kerevat and Kilakila

The successful applicants will supervise a team of research technicians and conduct innovative research work on a number of challenging entomological projects consistent that are of importance to both PNG and Pacific Region. Candidates will have a sound understanding of research methodology, experimental design, participatory research methods, and biometrics and should possess good writing and computer skills.

Applicants will hold a minimum of a Post Graduate, preferable Masters in entomology, zoology or agricultural science with seven (7) years experience in tropical entomology.

Candidates must have the ability and personal skills to efficiently manage an entomological group and work effectively in a multi-disciplinary research team

4.         Principal Scientist – Post Harvest, (Grade 15 - 16) – Based at NARI MRC, Bubia

The position reports to the Program Director – Agriculture Systems and will be responsible to effectively and efficiently plan, direct, manage, implement, monitor and review NARI’s Post Harvest & Processing Unit and lead applied and adaptive research to provide recommendations on post harvest and processing information to clients, stakeholders, farmers, partners and collaborators both locally and internationally.

The successful candidate will also facilitate and oversee the preparation of post harvest newsletters and reports for publications.

An additional role of this position will be to help develop, coordinate and implement post harvest & processing training activities.

Applicants must have a PhD in Post Harvest & Processing, Food Sciences, and or related field of studies with at least ten (10) years of research experience.

5.         Center Manager – Bubia, (Grade 12 – 14) – Based at NARI MRC, Bubia (PNG Citizens Only)

The Center Manager will be responsible for the day to day management and effective development of the NARI Momase Regional Centre at Bubia.

Candidates must possess strong commercial and people management skills, good organizing ability and be able to work under pressure.

The appointee will be responsible for all the operational and developmental activities on the Bubia and Labu stations and will be required to lead and participate in management decisions, plans and proposals of research projects activities, provide support as and when required on staff recruitment and workforce management, repair & maintenance of center facilities and staff accommodation, and attend to land matters and security issues within the Momase Regional Center.

Applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelor in Agriculture, Business Management or related discipline with preferably a Masters degree with five (5) years of management experience in a research and commercial environment.

6.     Cadet – Geography Information Systems (GIS) - Based at NARI Head Office, Lae (PNG Citizens Only).

Cadetship applicants must be recent graduates from 2016 to 2017 with a Bachelors Degree of Geography Information Systems (GIS) or related discipline with high academic results and strong interest in research and attention to detail.

Successful applicants will undertake a two-year cadetship program with the Institute.


Grade and salary levels for these positions will depend on qualifications, experience and the ability of the appointee.

Salaries and benefits include base salary, domestic market allowance, gratuity, superannuation, leave fares, amenities allowances, medical & life insurance and housing or housing allowance.
