Crop Protection

4. Fruit Fly Management in PNG

Fruit flies are the major pest of horticulture in the South Pacific. They lay their eggs into fruit and vegetables where the larvae cause direct fruit damage. This project uses a farmer participatory technology development (PTD) approach focusing specifically on;

(a) implementing effective integrated pre-harvest fruit fly management strategies to improve yields and quality of fruit fly host crops in PNG
(b) enhancing fruit fly management skills of farmers and extension workers through the Participatory Technology Development (PTD) approach and utilisation of extension networks.

The activities undertaken at present are trialing and implementing various technologies for fruit fly control on a Participatory Technology Development (PTD) approach. These technologies will include protein baits, physical barriers, bagging, Male Annihilation Technology (MAT), Control, Confidor, and MAT & Protein Bait combination. Farmer training and technology transfer is a key activity in the project.
