Genetic Resources
6. Conservation and Management of Lowland Animal Genetic Resources
NARI is the custodian of valuable breeding flocks of poultry and small ruminant animals which are in steady demand from smallholder farmers and have an important role to play in future livestock development programmes.
The objectives of the work are to conserve, manage and, where feasible, improve genetically the populations of tropical Priangan sheep, Papua New Guinea goats, Australorp chickens, Muscovy ducks and mixed-breed layer ducks maintained by the NARI Livestock Research Programme for research and national development. These populations remain the most secure gene pools for each of these breeds or species which have key roles to play in livestock production for smallholder farmers, particularly in remoter lowland locations.
Activities have included characterisation, breed comparisons and feeding systems. These livestock are also used in farmer training programmes.
