Livestock
2. Duck Feeding Systems
The NARI Livestock Programme maintains a number of duck strains: Peking, Rouen and Campbell (layer ducks of Anas species), and Muscovy ducks that have become highly demanded by smallholder farmers and can be easily raised. The production and sale of ducks to farmers need to be accompanied by information and training on suitable feeding and management systems.
The main objectives of this project are to formulate and assess low cost feeds based on locally available feed resources and to develop and assess simple, low intensity management systems for Muscovy ducks in subsistence production systems. Great opportunities lie in the area of feeding both species of duck using locally available agro-industrial by-products.
