6. Baseline Survey and Assessment of Smallholder Pig Production in Morobe Province
Smallholder pig production is important in Papua New Guinea as it accounts for almost 1.9 million pigs in the country. However, there is limited information available on aspects of pig production under smallholder management systems. Furthermore, production and reproductive performances of pigs under smallholder farming systems is generally low. This includes the poor growth rate, poor feed conversion efficiency, small litter size and high mortality, which are commonly attributed to low nutrition.
This is a study to collect baseline information on the current status of smallholder pig production in Morobe Province, i.e., their production practices, resource utilization to product uses. Seven districts will be surveyed and reported. Lessons learnt from such a study can be used to survey areas in the highlands where pig is by far more important.
