NARI Research and Development Projects

Technology Transfer and Adaptation

2. Potato Micro-propagation and Elite Seed Potato Production

Tissue culture plays a vital role in the speedy multiplication of potato for seed production and the provision or introduction of clean planting material free from the major diseases affecting the potato crop.
This became critically important with the outbreak of the Potato Late blight disease.

The role of NARI in this process is the provision of tissue cultured plantlets to the Fresh Produce Development Company for subsequent potato seed production and dissemination.

Activities include upgrading of the facilities and improvements to the methods used for the rapid multiplication and supply of potato plantlets, as well as increasing and then maintaining plantlet production.

Collaborating organisation: Fresh Produce Development Company and the activities are carried out in the tissue culture facility of the Highlands Programme at Aiyura
