Pyrethrum Research
Pyrethrum, Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium, is grown commercially in Enga and Western Highlands Provinces. It is the second largest cash crop in Enga.
However, since production was
discontinued for a number of years due to the closure of the Pyrethrum factory, farmers have
lost the high yielding clones, with high pyrethrin content. The factory at Kagamuga
(Western Highlands) was opened again in 2002 and is currently in operation.
NARI Tambul is currently undertaking a number of research studies on pyrethrum.
Objective
To select high yielding and high pyrethrin content parent clones for breeding
Outcome
Production of high yielding progeny lines having high pyrethrin content for distribution to farmers.
