Wheat Production
Development of High Altitude Wheat Production
Wheat has been grown in the Kandep area since its
introduction by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in mid 1998. NARI Kandep, in collaboration with
the PRC, is undertaking a number of surveys and research trials to make it become an alternative cash
crop and supplement staple food for local farmers.
Objectives
- Selection of wheat varieties for production in high altitude areas of PNG
- Optimisation of production practices (sowing rates, fertiliser rates, etc.) for wheat
- Determination of the economics of smallholder wheat production
- On-farm testing, demonstration and validation of wheat production technology
Expected Outputs
- Recommendation of wheat varieties for the high altitude highlands
- Recommendation for crop management practices for wheat in high altitude areas
- Farmer adoption of wheat as a new cash and/or food crop
- Understanding of the production costs and inputs including labour for smallholder wheat production and an assessment of the competitiveness of local wheat with imported wheat flour
- Farmers know how to process and cook in various ways
