Rice, Grain & Pulses Improment
The demand for rice and other grains (maize and wheat) has increased steadily over the years. This is clearly reflected in the imports (303,000 tonnes worth K536 million/ annum), an annual increase of 6 % in imports. This trend has negative implications on national food security and on the national economy through foreign exchange drain. PNG has high untapped year-round rice and other grain growing potential. This potential should be harnessed not only to reduce the current import bill but more importantly to ensure food security, rural employment, income generation and equitable distribution of wealth among the people in the country.
Research thrusts are:
- Introduction and evaluation of improved lines from international institutions (IRRI, CIMMYT, CIAT, AVRDC, ICRISAT) suitable for the highlands;
- Develop improved, cost effective and environment friendly technologies;
- Identify and promote appropriate machinery for milling;
- Studies on post-harvest and down-stream processing;
- Germplasm maintenance;
- Develop protocols for seed multiplication;
- Impart training for government and non-government extension/development personnel and farmers; and
- Develop and distribute extension material.
